Phuket to Koh Samui: Flight, Bus and Ferry Compared (2026 Guide)

Phuket is on Thailand’s Andaman coast, while Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand. There is no direct ferry between Phuket and Koh Samui: an overland journey crosses the mainland before the boat crossing. Bangkok Airways’ direct flight takes approximately one hour and is the fastest choice, usually at a higher price than a shared road-and-ferry ticket.

For better value, book a combined bus or minivan and ferry ticket via Surat Thani province and Donsak. Allow roughly a full travel day: seven to nine hours is a useful planning estimate, although current listings include shorter and longer journeys. Choose your exact pickup and arrival points before comparing prices, especially when fitting both coasts into your Thailand itinerary.

Prices are one-way examples, not fixed tariffs. US-dollar figures reflect the booking sites’ display currency; exchange rates and checkout charges can change the amount you pay. A listing labelled “ferry” can include a substantial bus journey.

Phuket to Koh Samui by direct flight

Bangkok Airways confirms the nonstop HKT–USM route and an approximate one-hour flight. Current 12Go schedule examples show 07:30–08:25 at US$103.26 and 11:00–11:55 at US$72.10. These are snapshots, not a guaranteed fare range or the complete daily schedule; check the current timetable for your date.

The airline’s public fare calendar did not provide a reliable November price or complete daily flight count when checked. Compare the final quote directly with the airline. Its route page advertises checked baggage and other full-service benefits, but read the allowance and change conditions attached to your selected fare.

Why pay more? You avoid the mainland crossing and ferry connection, which can make a substantial difference on a short holiday. Demand, booking date and available fare classes affect prices; do not assume that every short domestic flight has low-cost fares.

Include the journey from your beach hotel to HKT when weighing the saving. Keep a separate connection generous enough for baggage collection and check-in. If your earlier leg is Bangkok to Phuket, compare the whole itinerary before buying unrelated tickets.

How the joint ticket works

A joint ticket combines the mainland road journey and the boat crossing in one booking. You leave Phuket from an operator’s office, bus terminal or an included hotel pickup, travel across the peninsula, and continue towards Donsak. Some services change vehicles in Surat Thani town; others go directly to the ferry connection.

Confirm whether the advertised departure is your hotel collection time or the main vehicle’s departure. Also check the luggage allowance, meeting-point map and whether the ticket ends at a Samui pier or includes your hotel. “Koh Samui” alone is not a sufficiently precise destination.

Keep your passport, phone, booking confirmation and valuables with you when changing vehicles. Save the voucher offline and arrange mobile data before departure; our Thailand eSIM guide explains the options. Pack drinking water and a light layer for air-conditioned vehicles.

Operators, times and prices

The examples below appeared in the 12Go route schedule when checked. They describe different ticket products and are not promises that every departure runs daily. Open the individual listing to confirm pickup coverage and its arrival pier.

Operator / listed productDeparture–arrivalListed durationDisplayed price

Phantip 1970 Express06:30–16:3010 hoursUS$23.50
Call Me Taxi van + ferry07:00–15:308 hours 30 minutesUS$22.25

Consult Lomprayah’s official 2026 timetable before booking. Phantip’s own route explanation confirms the bus-terminal and Donsak connection, but its older article should not be treated as a current fare list.

Raja and Seatran operate the mainland-to-island ferry segment. Raja’s timetable effective from 23 October 2026 shows hourly Donsak–Samui departures from 04:00 to 19:00 and approximately 90-minute crossings. That does not mean a combined departure from Phuket is available at every ferry time.

Where you arrive on Koh Samui

Raja arrives at Lipa Noi, while Seatran’s car ferry serves Nathon. Lomprayah also sells Phuket connections to Nathon; always follow the pier named on your actual ticket. Different operators’ terminals are not interchangeable meeting points.

Arrange your onward taxi or shared transfer with the correct pier and arrival time. If staying around Chaweng, Lamai or Bophut, include the island transfer in your budget. A slightly more expensive ticket with hotel drop-off can be easier than arranging transport after a long day.

Private transfer and car ferry

A private road transfer gives your group its own vehicle and an agreed pickup point. Phuket Transfer’s published airport-to-Donsak prices are THB 5,799 for a sedan, THB 6,299 for an SUV/MPV and THB 6,999 for a minibus. These are per vehicle for the road segment, with ferry tickets separate; other pickup addresses require their own quote.

The provider estimates approximately 3½ hours from Phuket Airport to Donsak. Treat that as a road estimate, not a guaranteed hotel-to-hotel journey: add check-in, waiting, sailing and the final transfer. Ask for a written breakdown if you want the driver and vehicle to cross with you.

This option makes most sense when sharing the cost, carrying bulky luggage or travelling with children. Confirm suitable child seats and luggage space before choosing vehicle size. Private transport removes shared pickups but cannot remove ferry queues or weather disruption.

Driving yourself means crossing to the mainland, then boarding a vehicle ferry. Seatran confirms an approximately 90-minute Donsak crossing; Raja also carries vehicles. Check the current vehicle fare and passenger inclusions, reserve space, and obtain the rental company’s permission and insurance conditions for ferry travel.

Flying via Bangkok

A connection through Bangkok can occasionally be cheaper when promotional fares beat an expensive nonstop departure. Compare the total including bags, seat charges and any overnight stay. A small saving rarely compensates for a much longer travel day.

Check airport codes carefully: Bangkok’s BKK and DMK are different airports. Prefer a protected connection on one ticket where practical. Our Bangkok to Koh Samui guide covers the onward choices if you decide to stop in the capital.

Weather and sea conditions

The two coasts do not share identical rainy seasons. Phuket’s Andaman weather is generally wetter during the southwest monsoon, while Samui often has its wetter stretch in October–December. A sunny Phuket morning does not tell you what the Gulf crossing will be like.

Strong winds and rough seas can delay or cancel ferries. Check the operator’s notices before leaving your hotel, especially around a weather warning, and avoid treating a published arrival time as guaranteed. Compare both coasts in our best time to visit Thailand guide.

If your route is flexible, consider whether staying on the Andaman side suits your trip better. Our Phuket to Krabi guide and Phuket to Phi Phi ferry guide cover those alternatives.

Koh Samui to Phuket (return trip)

The return options mirror the outward journey: fly nonstop, book a combined ferry and road transfer, or arrange private transport. Select the correct Samui departure pier and check whether your Phuket destination is a terminal, hotel or the airport.

For an important flight from Phuket, the cautious choice is to return the previous day. A ferry delay can disrupt the entire chain, and separately booked flights generally do not protect a missed connection. Confirm your hotel pickup the evening before and keep the operator’s contact details accessible.

Which option should you choose?

  • Lowest overall budget: compare joint bus or minivan and ferry tickets, including both hotel transfers.
  • Limited holiday time: choose the direct flight if the fare fits your budget.
  • Prone to seasickness: flying avoids the sea crossing; a faster boat is not automatically more comfortable.
  • Family or group: compare a private vehicle plus ferry against everyone’s flight fares and baggage needs.

FAQ

Is there a ferry from Phuket to Koh Samui?

There is no direct ferry between the islands. Tickets marketed as Phuket–Samui ferries include an overland transfer to the Gulf coast before the boat crossing.

How long does it take to get from Phuket to Koh Samui?

A direct flight takes approximately one hour, excluding airport transfers and formalities. Combined road-and-ferry services generally take most of the day; check your ticket’s pickup and final arrival times.

What is the cheapest way from Phuket to Koh Samui?

A shared bus or minivan and ferry ticket is usually the best-value option. Compare the complete journey cost, because a cheap pier-only ticket may leave you paying separately for hotel transport.

Is it worth flying from Phuket to Koh Samui?

Usually yes if your holiday is short and the fare is affordable. For a longer trip with a tighter budget, spending a travel day on the combined route can make more sense.

How far is Koh Samui from Phuket?
