A direct flight to Koh Samui Airport (USM) is the fastest way from Bangkok, but it usually costs more than travelling through the mainland. Flying to Surat Thani and continuing by bus and ferry can offer good value. An overnight bus-and-ferry ticket is often the budget choice; a sleeper train is another option, although a comfortable berth plus transfers is not automatically cheaper.
Koh Samui is an island in the Gulf of Thailand. There is no bridge or railway onto it: travelling south by road or rail gets you to the mainland, then you need a boat. Compare the complete journey to your hotel, including Bangkok airport or station transfers, ferry connections and your arrival pier.

Prices are examples rather than fixed tariffs. Flight time excludes check-in, and a mainland transfer listing includes road travel as well as sailing. Confirm whether the hotel transfer and baggage are included before comparing totals.
Direct flights from Bangkok to Koh Samui
Bangkok Airways operates nonstop services from Bangkok to USM. BKK means Suvarnabhumi; DMK means Don Mueang. Bangkok Airways also advertises a Don Mueang–Samui route, so read the airport code rather than assuming every ticket uses BKK. An international arrival at one airport does not make a departure from the other an easy connection.
Samui has a privately developed airport associated with the Bangkok Airways group, and the Bangkok–Samui route has fewer nonstop operating choices than major mainland routes. Limited competition and demand help explain the premium, but prices still depend on the departure, baggage and fare conditions. Another airline’s booking page or codeshare label does not necessarily mean a different airline operates the flight.
Selected Bangkok Airways nonstop entries on 12Go’s route schedule take about 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, with example prices around US$73–164. Check the actual flight: some search results connect through another city and take much longer. Compare the final payable fare with Bangkok Airways directly.
Choose this option when your holiday is short or you want to avoid a sea crossing. Add time for reaching the airport and travelling from USM to your hotel. If you are still choosing accommodation before departure, our guide to where to stay in Bangkok helps you plan the first transfer.

Fly to Surat Thani, then bus and ferry
Surat Thani Airport (URT) is on the mainland, not on Samui. After landing, take a bus or van to the coast and a ferry to the island. AirAsia advertises island-transfer destinations including Samui; select the island destination and inspect every leg, rather than buying an URT flight and assuming the boat is included.
Nok Air serves Surat Thani, but combined Samui products must be checked for your date. Do not rely on an old Fly’n’Ferry description as proof that a package is currently sold. If no combined product appears, book the flight and a clearly described airport-to-Samui transfer separately.
Airport transfer examples on 12Go include Phantip and Seatran, with journeys of around 3 hours 15 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes. Published transfer listings start from THB 475; this is not the price of a Bangkok flight or a universal ferry-only fare. The complete flight-and-transfer total varies by date.
Check the last transfer you can realistically catch after collecting luggage. A cheap late flight may require a mainland overnight stay, removing the saving. With separate bookings, leave a buffer and check what happens if your flight is delayed; a single purchase is not automatically a protected airline connection.
Bangkok to Koh Samui by bus and ferry
A joint ticket combines the long-distance bus with the sea crossing, and sometimes a van or hotel drop-off. Bookaway lists operators such as Montanatip and Khao San Nara Travel, with examples around US$26–47 and approximately 13 hours 30 minutes to 18 hours. Compare the seat type and arrival point, not just the headline price.
Lomprayah’s current booking route identifies Bangkok Pinklao and Samui’s Pralarn Pier. Older descriptions often mention Khao San, but an office address is not proof of your boarding point. Other tickets leave from the Southern Bus Terminal or a separate operator office: follow the address and check-in instructions on your voucher.
12Go lists Lomprayah examples at 06:00–16:30 and 21:00–11:30 the following day. Treat these as departures to reconfirm, not a promise for every date. The overnight journey saves daytime travel hours, although reclining bus seats are different from train beds.

Keep valuables, medication and travel documents in a small bag with you. Ask whether luggage stays on the coach or must be moved at the ferry connection. Arrange a Thailand eSIM so you can read pickup messages and contact your hotel on arrival.
Bangkok to Koh Samui by train and ferry
Take a southern-line train to Surat Thani station in Phun Phin, then continue by road to the ferry. The station is not the ferry pier, and “Surat Thani” can mean the city, railway station or airport. Book the onward transfer from the place where you actually arrive.
Current station-to-station listings show overnight examples at 19:50–06:23 and 20:30–07:16, taking roughly eleven hours. Second-class air-conditioned sleeper examples are around US$22–30 before the bus and ferry; the exact berth price varies by date, train, upper or lower bunk and booking channel. These are intermediary examples, not a confirmed SRT counter tariff.
Use the official SRT D-Ticket website: choose English if needed, search Krung Thep Aphiwat to Surat Thani, enter your date, then select a sleeper class and available berth. Check the passenger details, departure station and final price before paying. Retain the issued ticket and follow its presentation instructions.
Allow roughly 13–18 hours for the full rail-and-ferry journey, depending on the transfer and waiting time. Reserve a connection with room for train delays. Chumphon is an alternative for Lomprayah’s island route, but its sea journey is longer than a simple Donsak crossing; compare the entire itinerary before choosing the station.
Ferry piers: Donsak, Chumphon and where you arrive on Samui
Donsak has separate operator terminals. Raja Ferry connects it with Lipa Noi, while Seatran’s car ferry connects it with Nathon. Raja’s official page displays a 05:00–06:30 Donsak–Lipa Noi example at THB 220 for a passenger. That price does not include your Bangkok journey, car or final hotel transfer.
Lomprayah links Chumphon with the Gulf islands, and also sells mainland connections through the Surat Thani/Donsak area. Pralarn, often described as Maenam, is the arrival named on its current Bangkok route. Other products can use Nathon or Bangrak; use the named pier on your ticket rather than a generic “Koh Samui” label.
Prebook a hotel pickup, take an agreed-price taxi or ask about a shared songthaew where available. Local prices vary, and the nearest pier is not always served by the cheapest through-ticket. Send your hotel the operator, arrival time and pier so the driver waits in the right place.
Samui’s Gulf-coast rainy pattern differs from Phuket’s Andaman season, with late-year rain an important consideration. Our best time to visit Thailand guide explains the regional differences. Check weather notices and ferry updates before travelling, especially when a flight depends on a boat connection.

Driving to Koh Samui
Drive south to Donsak, then use a vehicle ferry with Raja or Seatran. It is a long mainland journey; the driving time varies by starting address, traffic and rest stops, so check your route planner and the current timetable. Add check-in, queuing and the roughly ninety-minute crossing.
This makes sense if you already have a car and want it on Samui. Confirm that a rental agreement permits ferry travel, and obtain the correct vehicle quote. Seatran states that its vehicle ticket includes one driver, with additional passengers added separately. Reserve the return vehicle space rather than assuming you can board immediately.
Koh Samui to Bangkok (return trip)
The same choices work in reverse: fly from USM, cross to the mainland for a Surat Thani flight, or book ferry-and-bus or ferry-and-train travel north. Return prices and connections need a fresh check; do not assume the outward schedule reverses neatly.
For a mainland flight, choose an island departure that leaves enough time for the crossing, road transfer and airline check-in. If missing your international flight would be costly, returning to Bangkok a day earlier is a practical buffer. Plan the connection within your Thailand itinerary.
Which option should you choose?
- Time: fly directly to USM when saving most of a day matters.
- Budget: compare joint bus-and-ferry tickets with the full Surat Thani flight-and-transfer total.
- Experience: choose a sleeper berth if a night on the railway appeals to you.
- Group with luggage: compare baggage-inclusive direct flights or a vehicle ferry if you already have an authorised car.
For an Andaman-coast alternative, compare Bangkok to Phuket and the onward Phuket to Krabi journey. These are different coastlines, so avoid building a rushed itinerary around every beach destination.

FAQ
How do you get from Bangkok to Koh Samui?
Fly directly to USM, or travel to the mainland and finish by ferry. Mainland options include a Surat Thani flight, a joint bus-and-ferry ticket or a train followed by a road-and-boat transfer.
Why are flights to Koh Samui so expensive?
Samui has a privately developed airport and fewer nonstop operating choices from Bangkok than major mainland destinations. Demand and availability also affect fares, so compare dates and the complete Surat Thani alternative.
How long is the ferry to Koh Samui?
The Donsak–Lipa Noi example published by Raja takes about ninety minutes. A Chumphon journey or an airport-and-ferry package takes longer because it includes additional sailing, stops or road travel.
What is the cheapest way to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui?
A joint overnight bus-and-ferry ticket is often the lowest-cost practical option. Check your date and include hotel transfers and luggage charges before deciding.
Is there a train from Bangkok to Koh Samui?
There is no railway onto Samui. Take a train to Surat Thani or Chumphon, then arrange the relevant pier transfer and ferry.
Is it better to fly into Koh Samui or Surat Thani?
USM is easier and saves time because you arrive on the island. Surat Thani can be cheaper, but add the ground transfer, sea crossing and connection risk when comparing fares.
